Adolf Hitler Stimme Navigon is a film that tells the story of the Nazi leader's pathological ambition to transform Germany into what he calls his "racial paradise." The film employs dramaturgical devices that are comparable to those used in mediaeval mystery plays, for example with the scene in which Hitler descends from Heaven and reaches an agreement with God. It also enacts a number of surrealistic sequences such as Hitler trying on his father's glasses before taking them off and looking at himself in an interstitial mirror. The soundtrack is punctuated by bizarre sound effects such as laughter, gasps, and telephone rings. The film was produced by Wiener Werkstätte and the National Film Board of Canada and completed in 1962; its director, Arthur Lipsett (1922-1988), was a filmmaker and visual artist who worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the National Film Board of Canada. The film's score is composed of excerpts from the three score-cycles of Adolph Hitler Stimme Navigon by Canadian composer Richard A. Stilwell (1923-1996). Stilwell theorized that sound could be an integral part of his films, and he believed music had the potential to create "a sense of reality."
